Yesterday, my homeboy Ed Morita, more commonly known as @nctrnlbst on Twitter, hosted the eighth episode of Hawaii IRL’s Mix It Up! The show was livestreamed from the Hula Grill restaurant in the Outrigger Waikiki overlooking beautiful Waikiki beach. We covered Waikiki Beach Walk‘s Loco Moco Smackdown and presented a few viewers with gift certificates to local restaurants. Lately, I find myself spending more time in Waikiki, not necessarily for work related events, but because there are a lot of different restaurants and venues geared to the local palate. Besides, at one time Waikiki Wall’s was my second home, spending many hours in the water, on the sand, and in the culture.

I haven’t viewed the videos, I hope you enjoy the episode and I hope to be invited back again.

The ASI was followed by the PCATT IT Summit, targeted to tech people in education. The purpose of the IT Summit is to present new ideas in technology to keep educators on the cutting edge. Keynote speakers addressed topics such as social media in education, virtualization technology, and weaving learning theories with technology to produce a vibrant learning environment. PCATT believes that tech educators must be supported so they can prepare the next tech generation to be productive in the workplace.

We thank our engaging keynote speakers Dave Nelson, VMware IT Academy Program Manager, and Judith Beaver, Director of Instructional Technology at Punahou School. Pictured here is Neenz Faleafine, Chief Evangelist for Alltop and Founder of Pono Media, who gave a rousing and informative keynote presentation about how social media can be effectively used in education”

I first met Terry Starbucker through social business strategist and community builder and Starbucker’s partner, Liz Strauss. They are both the Co-Founders of SOBCon, a conference that focuses on the business of social and new media. I was fortunate enough to have attend last year and had been invited this year to participate in a panel discussion. Reluctantly, I had to decline to focus on my responsibilities to my community in Hawaii. Terry blogs regularly on Ramblings of a Glass Half Full and I recommend adding him to your MyAlltop pages.

Learning and personal growth is something that will never cease with me. I strive to improve as a person, community member, parent, daughter, friend, and colleague each day. It’s tough because I get comfortable in ways, it fits right with me, however the world is changing, therefore I need to evolve with her.

In his ebook, The Five Lessons You Need to Learn Before You Jump in the Pool, Terry focuses on five lessons that he wishes someone had taught him before he was put in an “executive position.”

Practice Full Spectrum Management: Terry introduces two types of leaders without proper training and guidance, the one who only praises the overachievers and the one who focuses on taking decisive action against the underachievers. But he cautions, the middle of the road leader isn’t very effective too, rather a balance of all three leadership skills.

Teach rather than Tell: Terry provides five ways of making sure what you want your team to execute, actually happens. They are:

Repition

Consistency

Plain English

Common Sense

“Hands on” is better

I’ve only shared the first two of his five leadership lessons because I really want you to read this very informative ebook. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on the “The Secrets of Work” and “The Seven Most Important Words”.

The kind folks at Ad2Honolulu have invited me to speak to their organization about the Art of Self Branding. As someone whom over the years first accidentally created a self-brand and then cultivated it into an actual business, I am honored to share my journey. Will you join us?

From their website:

A bunch of ad making, creative seeking, mac loving kids

Well . . . big kids maybe. And we’re among the top in our field. Why? We explore new ideas, stretch our minds, meet the right people, and sharpen our skills. And we’re doing it now. While we’re still young enough.

Ad 2 members—all no more than 32 years old—are either employed or interested in advertising and it’s related fields. Members bring fresh ideas, new imagery and revolutionary concepts with their youth and creativity.

Learning from each other is what makes Ad 2 Honolulu tick. New members soon find out that Ad 2 Honolulu is about gaining professional experience, while having fun. There’s heaps of talent and ambition in the club—reaching all corners of the industry—and with that comes a healthy helping of good ol’ partying.
