Keynotes will be Dr. Keiki-Pua Dancil, CEO of HiSciTech.org; Dr. Vinod Veedu, Director of Emerging Technologies at Oceanit; and Kaz Hashimoto, President of Avatar Reality.  Recently added to the conference is Seth Ladd of Google who will be talking about HTML5.

The conference is on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the UH Manoa Art Auditorium with further instructions for break out rooms.  Cost is: $35 for general, $25 for Tech Hui members.  Everyone is welcome, however the conference content will be geared towards science and technology, not necessarily hobbyists, however for me, it’s about the community.

I first met Terry Starbucker through social business strategist and community builder and Starbucker’s partner, Liz Strauss.  They are both the Co-Founders of SOBCon, a conference that focuses on the business of social and new media.  I was fortunate enough to have attend last year and had been invited this year to participate in a panel discussion.  Reluctantly, I had to decline to focus on my responsibilities to my community in Hawaii.  Terry blogs regularly on Ramblings of a Glass Half Full and I recommend adding him to your MyAlltop pages.

Learning and personal growth is something that will never cease with me.  I strive to improve as a person, community member, parent, daughter, friend, and colleague each day.  It’s tough because I get comfortable in ways, it fits right with me, however the world is changing, therefore I need to evolve with her.

In his ebook, The Five Lessons You Need to Learn Before You Jump in the Pool, Terry focuses on five lessons that he wishes someone had taught him before he was put in an “executive position.”

• Practice Full Spectrum Management: Terry introduces two types of  leaders without proper training and guidance, the one who only praises the overachievers and the one who focuses on taking decisive action against the underachievers.  But he cautions, the middle of the road leader isn’t very effective too, rather a balance of all three leadership skills.
• Teach rather than Tell: Terry provides five ways of making sure what you want your team to execute, actually happens.  They are:
  • Repition
  • Consistency
  • Plain English
  • Common Sense
  • “Hands on” is better

I’ve only shared the first two of his five leadership lessons because I really want you to read this very informative ebook.  If you don’t, you’ll miss out on the “The Secrets of Work” and “The Seven Most Important Words”.

The Pacific Center for Advance Technology Training (PCATT) will be hosting their 8th Annual ITSummit on Thursday, May 20 – Friday, May 21, 2010 on the Honolulu Community College campus.  This year’s theme is social media in education and the organizers have lined up speakers to lead discussions in virtualization, using wikis and blogs in education, mobile application development, and more.  I’ve been asked to be the morning keynote to kick off what will be an exciting and vigorous two-day conference about social media in education.
