Lists, especially “Top Lists” are always open to discussion and debate because everyone has different opinions. It’s these differences in opinions that can make the world go round, crank the wheels of innovation, and churn up passionate emotions.

Tonight, digital ronin Burt Lum, co-host of Hawaii Public Radio’s technology show, Bytemarks Cafe presented the Top 20 Social Media Geeks in Hawaii at Pecha Kucha 5.0. If you’re not familiar with Pecha Kucha, in a coconut shell it’s an informal presentation format in which the presenter has 20 slides and 20 seconds to present each slide. (Note: This is an informal presentation format, for an equally effective, but a bit more formal presentation format follow Guy Kawasaki’s 10/20/30 Rule).

Here is the Top 20 Social Media Geeks in Hawaii as compiled by Burt, and in case you’re wondering, he says, “it’s very subjective.”

Earlier in the week, Burt had contacted me for a picture so I knew I made his list, but I did not expect to be placed in the top position. I am thankful for Burt’s kind thoughts. I agree with everyone he has on his list and there are easily more people that could be added and room to rearrange positions, however I admire Burt’s courage for compiling the Top 20 Social Media Geeks in Hawaii.

Update: As Burt mentioned in his comment below, his list is not a ranking, but a flow.

  • I look forward to following you guys on twitter
  • Mahalo for all of this link love Neenz. Burt highlighted a lot of individual accomplishments and collectively I am blown away at how social media activities have flushed out so many unconnected souls from our midst right here in Hawaii!
  • Neenz,

Thanks so much for posting this list.

While I was watching Burt's presentation I was amazed at the diversity of interests and "social media" skills that were represented in his slides. At the same time I was wondering how I'd ever learn about the others as the slides all went so fast. You have solved that--woohoo! Mahalo!

Burt's list not just people using computers. It appears to me to be about people who are "social" in the fullest sense. I'm amazed and humbled to be in such good company. I learn things from each person here, and appreciate the many different ways that we see the world.

Neenz, thank you for your sense of flow, documentation, and ongoing conversation.

  • I mean, respectfully, Are You Kidding Me? This takes Astro-Turfing to a whole new level. It's bad enough that our weekly HPR tech show has become self-promotion, but the "Pono" media brand, too? I love you, but, can we try to keep the "social media" thing REAL?
  • I'm honored! I've got a career, a family, and I do a lot of writing. I'm a super busy mom, but social media takes me into the lives of others while I'm at home taking care of my family, toiling over chores (LOL) or at work taking care of providers through my job at HMSA!

I just wish I could do even more! Mahalo, Burt!
  • This is a pretty neat list.

I'd say I was already following/subscribing/familiar with about 10 of the folks on this list, so it's time to discover the others now.

As a techie who's not living in Hawaii (yet) but completely engulfed in the Aloha Spirit, the folks on this list are great company to look up to.

  • Just wanted to say that I am honored to be included on this list and to be in the company of so many wonderful people in the Hawaii social media crowd.

Mahalo Burt and to you Neenz for inspiration!

    Aloha,
    Vernon
  • Aloha Neenz,

I'm stunned, honored, and for once in my life just about speechless. Wow. To be included on a list with so many people I admire is humbling. I just want to say how much I appreciate all the ways both you and Burt have been so incredibly supportive of me and The Canary Report. The most important thing you both taught me is that social media is all about helping and supporting others: that at its core, it's all about the Aloha Spirit. You both are living examples I strive to emulate. From my heart to yours: Mahalo!

    Aloha,
    Susie
  • Thanks for publishing the list, Neenz! :) Since I couldn't attend Pecha Kucha night, it's great to see who made Burt's "Top 20"! I'm honored and flattered to be included.

    Aloha,
    Donna
  • Hi Neenz,

You absolutely deserve to be on top of the list. You ARE social media. ;-) I want to say mahalo for sharing your manao with me.

And thanks for sharing Burt's list. While I was aware that I might be on it, had no idea he was actually ranking folks from 20 to 1. WOW! There's so many folks in Hawaii doing great things with social media and I'm glad to know I've met almost everyone on Burt's list. We've got a great network of folks collaborating and sharing the Aloha Spirit here and abroad.

    Aloha,
    Nathan
  • Cool beans, Neenz, and congrats! Sorry I couldn't make it, I had promised a colleague dinner for months. I wanted to go to see who the other geeks were! yay!
  • Neenz, you're number one in my book but I failed to mention that the list was not in order of ranking. It was in order for flow. I put Ryan and myself at the beginning as an introduction. I wanted to intersperse the guys and the gals throughout the mix and I wanted a strong finish, hence Nadine, Andy and you. Glad you enjoyed the presentation, it was an intense 6:40 minutes.
  • Burt,

Thanks for the clarification, posted an update. I hope you continue presenting at Pecha Kucha.
